Religious Harmony – an Alternate View

Religious Harmony – an Alternate View

28th April 2018 0 By Vijay Mathew

I am an ordinary India Citizen; and I am very familiar with one statement since my childhood.

“India is a Secular Country”.

There are two co-existing words which always accompanies the above statement, i.e. “Religious Harmony”. I have a doubt, if India is really a secular country, why we often hear words ‘Secular’ and ‘Religious Harmony’? And I always have a problem with the co-existence of the words “Religious Harmony”. Why this word Religion in front of the word Harmony?

Is it because harmony is insufficient? Or Religion is always ahead of Harmony?

Is it because humans cannot be in harmony, if the religion is not there?

In reality (especially in Indian context), this religion is actually creating a barrier to ‘Harmony’. Hope you all agree with me. All religion teach (not sure what they preach) us the importance of friendship and brotherhood, that helps us to be in harmony. That is, religion is only a tool that helps us to reach the state of harmony.

As simple this thought is, as valuable its relevance. Our actions prove that, we are not fit enough to decide the value of simple things. May be because we are researching on ‘How to make simple things more/most complex?’

Once, I was travelling in our school bus (may be at the age of 8 or 9), I happen to chat with our new driver uncle. I asked him many things, and also his religion (don’t know why I asked)? He replied me “I born as a human, the society call me a Hindu”. I don’t know it’s his own quote or he had borrowed someone else? But it changed my perspective about religion.

I am borrowing the following quotes from Gita, Quran, Bible and quote of Buddha;

“The peace of God is with them whose mind and soul are in harmony, who are free from desire and Wrath, who know their own soul”_ Bhagavad Gita

“And you should forgive and overlook: do you not like God to forgive you? And Allah is the Merciful Forgiving”. _Qur’an

“Love your neighbor as yourself.’ No other commandment is greater than these”._ Bible

“Judge Nothing, you will be happy. Forgive everything, you will be happier. Love everything you will be happiest”._ Buddha

We all use computer software, we are taught/trained to operate the software; but, we don’t know what coding/programming that the developer has designed. If it is rightly programmed, we will get the right result. It is also important that the user should have the capability to understand, if there is some error in the output. Else, he will be in the losing end.

We all know teaching of religion(s) is not the barrier to harmony, it’s the preachers of religion are creating real barriers to harmony. They create the barriers in the name of religion, caste, colour etc. Let’s try to make them experience the state of harmony. Words viz. ‘Religious Harmony’, ‘Secularism’, ‘Brotherhood’ etc has all become anachronistic in today’s caustic environment. Hope everyone understood the whole problem is created by some words.

So let’s work to be in harmony; and please let the Gods be in Harmony.
